West Central is a coffee shop predominantly run by volunteers. We serve great food and coffee but we are more than just a coffee shop, this is why ….. being part of Christ Central means we love this area and all the different people that make it what it is, we are part of the local community and want to support it. We invite everyone to experience the type of hospitality that demonstrates the love of Jesus, that’s why we are more than just a coffee shop.

An evening of board games

Join us for our monthly board game night. Whether you’re an avid board gamer or just want to learn a new game, you are welcome to join us!

Last Saturday of every month!

No need to book tickets – just turn up on the evening and join in.

Refreshments are available to purchase; jacket potatoes, sandwiches, wraps and cakes, and the normal selection of hot and cold drinks.

Volunteering

There are different ways you can volunteer and we are always looking for enthusiastic people to serve alongside us here at West Central. If you are interested, please ask in the coffee shop.

Opportunities

Food Prep

Our customers need to eat! We need people who can prepare food on a regular basis and help the coffee shop serve great snacks and meals to our customers.

We are looking for people with sandwich skills, cake creators, and traybake tantalisers!

Everyone loves good food, and if you are great with flavours and filings, we want to hear from you!

We think you should:

have customer service skills
enjoy working with other people
be able to follow instructions and requests
be able to use your initiative
have (or be happy to work towards) Food Hygiene certification

This is a core role for the coffee shop, so these duties need to be carried out efficiently and with care. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

preparing food items
using a variety of kitchen equipment such as mixers, special knives and cutters
maintaining your working area in a clean and safe way and in compliance with Food Hygiene regulations
unloading deliveries
organising the storeroom

This is a fulfilling and interesting role. You will:

feel part of a great team
see your work being appreciated
gain experience working with food
work closely with management

Cleaner

Our cleaners will be keeping the areas clean for guests and other volunteers, making sure that regulation standards are met. This role would normally happen at the end of the day but could be conducted at other times.

This is a behind-the-scenes role, but extremely important to the safe running of West Central. You will need to be:

dependable and a good timekeeper
thorough
and take great pride in your work

If you enjoy working behind the scenes and love to feel a sense of achievement, this could be the role for you! There are a few key attributes that are needed:

happy to take instruction from the team manager
enjoy working in the background
be thorough and pay attention to detail
work well with others in the team
be able to work on your initiative and follow procedures
be sensitive and have an understanding the importance of hygiene

following procedures to maintain a clean and safe environment for everyone
washing the floor, wiping surfaces and furniture, cleaning toilet area
following food safety and hygiene regulations in food premises
helping maintain stock levels of cleaning products
maintaining cleaning equipment
following Health and Safety (HSE) guidelines on use of chemicals for each task

Every job that is carried out in West Central is important, and cleaning is one of the crucial elements for creating a welcoming and pleasant environment. As part of this team, you will:

Cashier

As a front-line member of the team, you will be interested in making people feel welcome and giving great service. Your positive and friendly manner will shine through as you help people decide what they would like with a big smile!

We are more interested in your love of people than previous experience – we can teach you how to use the till and equipment, but interpersonal skills are also key to this role!

To succeed as a West Central cashier, you should:

love meeting new people
be willing to learn procedures and till equipment
want to work as part of a team

You will spend most of your time behind the counter taking orders and making sure customers feel important. So, if you think you could do that well, we want to hear from you!

We need you to:

be able to work well under pressure with patience and a smile
have great attention to detail
love working with others with sensitivity and understanding
be willing to show off your customer service skills
be confident handling money and giving change
have good communication skills
enjoy getting to know people.

Cashiers keep the orders coming – they make sure things are not missed and that customers feel valued and welcome. So, it would be helpful if you can:

working at a quick pace
using electronic equipment like a tablet or a till
following set processes
counting money
multitasking! (sometimes you might need to do a few other tasks during the day)
building rapport with people easily
carrying out some housekeeping, like clearing worktops and keeping the counter clean and tidy.

There are lots of pluses to helping us serve customers. And here are some of them:

Barista

A barista knows all about the drinks and snacks that they serve to customers. If you have never been a barista before, we can help you get there through training and practice under our team’s supervision.

To succeed as a West Central barista, you should:

either have barista experience, or be willing to learn
always be keen to provide excellent service
have a positive and friendly manner
be willing to be a regular part of the team

A barista needs to be able to build rapport with customers as well as the team. In this key role you will need to:

have a happy, positive, and friendly personality
be adaptable and able to deliver great customer service
enjoy a fast pace or work
have the ability to concentrate and employ attention to detail
be keen to work with others to bring new ideas in to fruition
be confident and able to work unsupervised (or work towards this)
be physically fit

Along with all members of the team, the baristas need to greet customers as they arrive.

Your main duties will be

taking detailed orders, preparing drinks and food, and taking payments
keeping the service area clean and stocked
adhering to all food safety regulations and quality controls
making customers feel welcome
communicating customer feedback to the Manager

There are lots of benefits to volunteering as a Barista at West Central, including:

Social Media

The Social Media team will raise our profile in the community and enhance its online presence through our various social media platforms.

This team is predominantly a creative one: not only does it involve administering social media content, but there will also be responsibility for designing and developing content on a regular basis as well as the occasional campaign.

If you love Social Media and being creative, this team may suit you. It would be great if you had the following skills:

a solid understanding of how each social media channel works
know how to write engaging content
previous experience in social media management
able to create content that promotes ministries and events happening in West Central

Social Media has become an important communication tool for most businesses, and West Central in no exception! We are looking for people who can carry out regular updates and help plan campaigns to promote the coffee shop and events that will eventually take place.

We would love it if you had some or all of the following skills:

finding time to work with the team to develop social media campaigns and the odd promotion
thinking of ideas to raise the profile and on-line presence for WC
helping to monitor WC social media accounts and offer constructive interaction with users and make meaningful connections
having ideas for creating methods for finding and saving online customer reviews
enjoying planning, strategising, and setting goals
contributing ideas that help develop and maintain our online reputation
managing our digital content management (including website)
understanding data and be willing to help the team act on the information
collaborating with other areas in the church

Social media is a great way to reach people. We hope that volunteering to help us out will:
